01Distances and drive times
Shangarh is in the Sainj Valley in Kullu district, at about 2,150 m. Every route uses the Chandigarh–Manali highway and leaves it at Aut, just after the Aut tunnel. From Aut the road follows the Sainj river to Sainj town, then climbs about 20 km to Shangarh.
| From | Distance | Time by road |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | About 500 km | 12 to 13 hours |
| Chandigarh | About 260 km | 7 hours |
| Kullu–Manali Airport, Bhuntar | About 50 km | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Aut | About 40 km | 1.5 hours |

02From Delhi and Chandigarh
By car
Take the highway to Chandigarh, then the Manali road through Kiratpur and Mandi to Aut. Leave the highway just after the Aut tunnel and follow signs to Sainj, then Shangarh. From Chandigarh the drive is about 7 hours. From Delhi, start early to reach Shangarh in daylight, or break the drive overnight at Chandigarh or Mandi.
By bus
Overnight Volvo buses to Manali leave Delhi and Chandigarh in the evening and stop at Aut early the next morning. Ask the conductor to drop you at Aut. From there, a taxi to Shangarh takes about 1.5 hours.
By train
The nearest major railway station is Chandigarh. From there, take a Manali bus to Aut or a taxi all the way.
03From Bhuntar airport
Kullu–Manali Airport is at Bhuntar, about 50 km from Shangarh. It has a small number of flights, mostly from Delhi, and they can be cancelled in bad weather, so keep a day spare if you have a connection to catch.
From the airport, drive back down the highway towards Aut, then up to Sainj and Shangarh. A taxi takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Tell us your flight time and we will put you in touch with a local taxi driver.
04The road to Shangarh
The road is paved all the way except the last 8 km into Shangarh, which is an unpaved track along the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park.
- In fair weather most cars manage the track. Drive slowly and use first and second gear on the steep parts.
- In the monsoon, an SUV or a car with good ground clearance is better.
- Sainj is the last market town on the way. Buy anything you need there.
- Mobile signal can drop on the last stretch. Save our number before you set out: +91 77188 90660.
- After snow in winter, a 4x4 may be needed on the unpaved stretch. Local 4x4 taxis are available; call us and we will arrange one.
- Prefer not to drive the last stretch? Call us ahead and we will arrange a local taxi from Sainj.
